YELLOW EYED LEAF FROG

Scientific name: Agalychnis annae

Range: Costa Rica

IUCN Red List Status: Endangered

The rate of gestation of yellow-eyed leaf frog is precise, but very responsive to temperature, and in the wild, climate change is making frogs hatch too early or too late, causing disruptions all throughout the food chain. The changing climate is also encouraging a deadly fungus known as ‘chytrid’ to spread. Lowland forests are becoming warmer, but as more moisture rises, thicker clouds form in the mountains, and the habitat for these frogs becomes substantially cooler. Their immune systems weaken, while the chytrid fungus, which prefers cooler climes, becomes stronger.

The resultant disease, ‘chytridiomycosis’, has afflicted amphibians worldwide, and has infected and destroyed more species of vertebrate than any in recorded history. One third of amphibian species are threatened with extinction, and around 120 have already been lost.

RAINETTE AUX YEUX JAUNES

Nom scientifique: Agalychnis annae
