Monarch butterflies travel over 2500 miles from the northeast United States, and southeast Canada to the mountain forests in central Mexico, where they find the right climate conditions to hibernate from the beginning of November to mid-March. Milkweed is the only plant on which monarch caterpillars will feed. Unfortunately, urban planning and the use of pesticides in agriculture are responsible for the growing scarcity of milkweed.

Consequently, the migratory monarch butterfly has been on the red list of IUCN endangered species since 2022.
____
