HYACINTH MACAW

Scientific name: Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus

Range: Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay

IUCN Red List Status: Vulnerable

The Panatal is a vast, biologically rich tropical South American wetlands as well as the stronghold of the hyacinth macaw, which at up to 39’’ (1 meter) long is the world’s largest flying parrot. Accross its range, the bird feeds almost exclusively on the fruits of just two palms, and favors nest holes of old manduvi trees (Sterculia apetala).

The march of modern farming has damaged many nest sites, and the species was severely affected by the 1980’s pet trade. In 1990, Neiva Guedes launched the Hyacinth Macaw Project, focusing on the Panatal population. Her team installs nest boxes (and look after natural holes, too), and help instill pride ‘ownership’ among the local cattle ranchers. It’s been a huge success: the Panatal population of hyacinth macaws rose from around 1,500 in 1990 to over five thousand in 2017, and is a major draw for eco-tourists.

FRANÇAIS

ARA HYACINTHE

Nom scientifique: Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus
