GOLDEN SNUB-NOSED MONKEY

Scientific name: Rhinopithecus roxellana

Range: Gansu, Hubei, Shaanxi, Sichuan provinces (China)

IUCN Red List Status: Endangered

In the mountain forests of west-central China, where snow may lie for six months each year, troops of golden snub-nosed monkeys get by on eating mostly pine needles and lichen. Today, the species, which the government regards as a national treasure, has full legal protection. How has environmental changes affected them in the past couple of million years, and what does this century hold in store? One report suggests the species’ range will reduce by almost 30 percent by 2020, 70 percent by 2050, and over 80 percent by 2080. Recent genetic studies suggest the spread of humanity began putting pressure on this golden monkey a good five centuries ago.

RHINOPITHEQUE DE ROXELLANE

Nom scientifique: Rhinopithecus roxellana
