LOWLAND GORILLA

Scientific name: Gorilla gorilla gorilla

Range: Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon

IUCN Red List Status: Critically Endangered

This is Djala, a western lowland gorilla, photographed at an English reserve run by the Aspinall Foundation. He was rescued from Gabon in the 1980s as an infant, having seen his entire family killed by poachers. At the rescue centre, he gradually overcame the profound traumas of his childhood, and after 30 years was taken home to the Gabonese forests with his new family. His health has improved in the wild: the lumps above his left eye receded, he lost excess bodyweight, and he should flourish in his old age.

There are still maybe a quarter million western lowland gorillas in the wild, but since this number is expected to tumble by 80 percent over a three-generation span (from 2005 to 2971), the species qualifies as critically endangered. As well as disease - including Ebola - two key-threats are habitat loss and illegal hunting for bushmeat.

GORILLE DES PLAINES OCCIDENTALES

Nom scientifique: Gorilla gorilla gorilla
