MILITARY MACAW

Scientific name: Ara militaris

Range: Mexico to Argentina

IUCN Red List Status: Vulnerable

The military macaw faces a battle for survival. A 2007 Defenders of Wildlife report estimated that each year, up to 78,500 birds were being caught in Mexico alone for the pet trade, and that three-quarters of them were dying in transit. Poachers generally use mist nets, to avoid damaging the “goods”, but some will recklessly fell trees at a nesting squab - a double whammy given that tree holes are in such short supply that mature pairs have to wait for their turn, sometimes for years, for occupancy. In 2008, Mexico passed an export ban on its twenty-two parrot species, and in 2015, the United States added the military and great green macaws to its Endangered Species Act. But the illegal trade continues, with much of it (in Mexico at least) destined for the local market, not export. The fight is still on.

ARA MILITAIRE

Nom scientifique: Ara militaris
