"Ravens are omnivorous, sociable, and very intelligent—qualities that we also ascribe to our own species—and they feature prominently in mythologies around the world. In Western culture, these scavengers are often seen as omens of evil and death, but the native cultures of the North American Pacific Northwest revere the bird as the creator of the Earth, moon, sun, and stars—even if they also believe the birds to be mischievous tricksters and cheaters.
Although it may seem unlikely, black feathers actually help ravens thrive in hot, sunbaked environments—unlike pale feathers, which deflect sunlight and allow more of the sun’s energy to reach the skin, dark body feathers absorb most of the sun’s energy, holding the heat away from the skin and helping the birds stay cool during the heat of the day."
