Essence is a powerful and evocative series by Jan C. Schlegel, created to convey the beauty, dignity, pride, and hope of communities who live in harmony with their native traditions. The portraits span tribal groups across Africa and Asia, including the Turkana, Maasai, and Himba, as well as the Kalash, Pashtun, and Hazara of South and Central Asia.
Shot with a handmade wooden camera and hand-toned using a unique chemical process, Schlegel captures every detail — from textures and scars to the quiet presence of his subjects. His prints reflect a deep intimacy and respect for cultural identity.
One of the main portraits in the series, Zaharia, Kalashi Tribe, Pakistan, depicts the grandmother of Monteria, a young woman from the Kalash people, one of the smallest Indo-Aryan minorities living in the remote Hindu Kush. Traditionally polytheistic, the Kalash practice animism with roots in ancient Vedic Hinduism. Under pressure to convert, many families — including Monteria’s — have lost access to their traditional dress, customs, and celebrations.
Schlegel’s printing process is meticulous: it took him two years to perfect the toner formula, and each print requires 8 to 12 hours to complete. Only the skin and hair are toned, creating a striking emotional focus.
