"Monsoon Season was inspired by a flood in my basement studio during summer 2010. Atop the tentacle-like sea bottom, reminiscent of sea anemones or corals, I am sailing in a boat, which is a disposable cup, and using a plastic spoon as an oar. By depicting disposable items instead of an actual boat and a paddle, my intention was to evoke a sense of jeopardy and weakness.
Sea anemones are Cnidarians, which only have oral and aboral passages. They prey on small fish by luring them with their elaborate tentacles as they swim by. Their tentacles have lethal cnidocytes which release poison at intruders or prey. The tentacles expressed in this work represent a negative and difficult process or crisis. They emphasize on the feeling of exposure to a violent situation. It is also a metaphor for overcoming adversities in life, like walking through a briar patch."

"Monsoon Season (Saison de la mousson, ndlr) me fut inspirée suite à l'inondation de mon studio, situé en sous-sol, durant l'été 2010. Je me suis mise en scène naviguant au-dessus d'anémones et coraux, dans un bateau semblable à une tasse en carton géante, et ramant à l'aide d'une cuillère en plastique. En évoquant des élements jetables issus du quotidien plutôt qu'un bateau traditionnel, je souhaitais évoquer la fragilité et le côté instable du parcours de chacun."
