"In The Whisper, we see Paredes facing the viewer, her form nearly hidden by luxuriant foliage. She draws her hands up to her face, revealing only her dark eyes gazing intently outward. In this rendition of the body wholly transformed, Paredes alters herself into something otherworldly; not animal, but a being with the capacity (and need for) camouflage.

And most poignantly, the artist’s use of botanical themes also become a way of enacting a form of still life or vanitas. In northern European paintings of the seventeenth century, depictions of bouquets or of arrangements of flowers and fruits (and sometimes skulls) symbolized life’s transience and the inevitability of decay and mortality.
