Specifically for Context Art Miami, Thomas Judisch produced three new versions of his double peak baseball cap bronze sculpture titled Janus Head, one in black patina, one in shiny natural bronze and one in green patina.
The bronze sculpture "Janus Cap" by Thomas Judisch holds profound symbolic significance.
Drawing inspiration from the ancient Roman mythology, Judisch offers his own contemporary version of the god Janus. Often depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions —one looking to the past and the other to the future—, Janus symbolizes the passage of time and the dual nature of existence. He presided over the beginning and ending of conflict, and hence war and peace, and is associated to transitions. Janus was also linked to doorways and gateways, signifying his role as a protector of thresholds, both literal and metaphorical.
Judisch revisits the ancient theme through an objet anchored within modern times and American culture: a cap but with two opposite bills. The choice of a classic and noble medium such as cast bronze to create such a common object invites us to question the importance we attach to our daily surroundings and actions, and the impact a change might trigger in our lives. With Janus Cap, Judisch suggests a possible change and new horizons.
