VERSION FRANÇAISE AU-DESSOUS

Table tipping has been central to Spiritualism since its earliest days. In the hands of mediums, tables seem to come alive — tilting, knocking, even levitating. Researcher Walter Meyer zu Erpen thinks tables caught on simply because they bring people together.

Skeptics blame trickery or involuntary muscle movements. British psychologist Kenneth Batcheldor took a different view. Through hundreds of experiments starting in the 1960s, he argued that group activities like table tipping quiet the mind and reduce fear, creating space for psychic ability to emerge. He also believed playfulness — and genuine expectation that the table would move — were essential.

The cover photo comes from a workshop led by Reverend Jane, a Spiritualist medium whose abilities surfaced early. At six, she saw a spirit in her grandmother's closet. By nineteen, strange things were happening around her constantly: cans flying off supermarket shelves, ashtrays sliding on their own, a candle that leapt three feet into the air, did a somersault, and fell to the floor. The most frightening episode was hearing what sounded like an intruder ransacking her bedroom — only to find the room completely undisturbed. Shaken, Jane was pointed toward Lily Dale, where she found a mentor who helped her understand and develop her gifts.
