FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

I found my way into a few dark séances — a rarity at Lily Dale, where most circles are held in brighter conditions to avoid suspicions of fraud. The idea excited me, but documenting them proved harder than I expected. How do you photograph the invisible?

These images were taken during one of medium Patricia Price's Thursday night séance circles. We passed around a red flashlight, each taking a turn holding it while meditating. During the second photograph, everyone in the room reported seeing a second face floating beside the woman depicted — similar to hers, but slightly different. Voices called out: "It's her grandmother!" "Her doppelgänger?" "Marie Laveau!" I strained to see it, but couldn't. I saw only a woman holding a red flashlight, and I tried to make a straightforward picture of that.

When I developed the film, the frame contained exactly two faces, just as the others had described. The accidental photograph turned out to be more psychologically true to the experience than the one I had meant to take. My shutter had created the perfect metaphor for something I couldn't see myself. I found the mishap thrilling — synchronistic, uncanny. It felt like I had opened a door to somewhere else.
