FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

Our first session was a lecture and demonstration on trance and mesmerism. We were told that the trance state was essential to many forms of mediumship. The exercises aimed to get people hypnotized — I was chosen from the crowd, tried my best to surrender, and felt nothing but embarrassed.

I had traveled to Arthur Findlay College with Lauren Thibodeau, a registered medium from Lily Dale who was there to study trance development. Lauren and I had become close friends after I watched her deliver remarkably detailed messages to a crowd at Inspiration Stump one day and followed her home, impressed. Through our friendship I gained an intimate window into the mind of a medium. Lauren's mediumship had roots in childhood trauma that forced her to dissociate — experiences she said "broke her open" and led her to discover deep inner resources.

She had first come to Arthur Findlay College in search of trance instruction. Her ability had surfaced unexpectedly on New Year's Eve 1989, when she dropped into a trance in front of her husband and his friend — who never visited their home again. Lauren described it as "a call to deal with a reality that didn't seem possible." Painful pressure headaches followed, and she realized she needed to take control: "You're working it, or it is working you." She came to believe that mediums must heal themselves before they can heal others.
