Provenance

FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

Spiritualists generally overlook their photographic history because it failed to serve as evidence. Ectoplasm, to many, implies fraud. Yet Spiritualism was the first religion to create an original iconography through photography rather than painting — an achievement rarely celebrated within the movement itself.

Kai and I have talked about the strangeness of Spiritualist imagery. He sees the bizarre, grotesque quality as organic: "This bizarreness opens up something in the spectator that would not become open without the spectacle." For Kai, the séance works by destabilizing perception: "It's the distortion of the perception of the physical world that opens our access to another one. Darkness is a tool for these processes. The history of the supernatural is the materialization of the unknown."

In Kai's work, ectoplasm's iconic power is fully embraced. The story of Spiritualism is re-enacted, re-presented, re-told.
