FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

In Spiritualism, the full materialization of a spirit is ectoplasm's ultimate expression. The first photograph of a materialized spirit was made in 1874 by British physicist Sir William Crookes, showing him holding the arm of Katie King, daughter of the spirit guide John King. Crookes wrote beneath the image: "Her overpowering presence made you feel it would not be idolatry to kneel." As researcher Maurice Barbanell described it, a successful materialization produces "a living, pulsating, breathing, solid, conscious being who talks and walks, has heart and pulse beats, is warm and solid to the touch."

In 2015, Kai Muegge announced his own materializations — first a young girl appearing to her parents, then the cloaked spirit of Aleister Crowley, and finally John King himself, emerging from Kai's cabinet with defined features and a full beard. After seeing the photographs, I booked a flight to Switzerland to witness it myself.

A materialization did occur — the spirit of Theosophist Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. Kai said Olcott was drawn by my presence, since he too had documented séances. Olcott left me an apport: an American trade dollar dated 1873. When I showed Kai my photographs, he was blunt: "Shannon, it was literally a mediumistic preterm birth!" He explained that the pressure to perform had caused him to produce an incomplete result. Weeks later, Kai's photographer Markus Kappeler captured a fully formed Olcott — which Kai published online beside historical photos of the Colonel, declaring: "Olcott is amazingly present, with open eyes."
