FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

Physical mediumship — which aims to produce objective evidence of life after death, such as ectoplasm — fell out of fashion in the mid-20th century, retreating from churches into private home circles. It survived largely through Gordon Higginson, who kept it alive at Arthur Findlay College through his popular physical mediumship weeks, which culminated in his own sensational ectoplasm séances. After his death in 2003, the college struggled to continue without him.

One of our first sessions in 2003 was a lesson on the medium's cabinet — a device said to accumulate spiritual energy. A buzz went through the room when we learned we would be using Gordon's actual cabinet. His presence still permeated the college — large portraits loomed everywhere, and people traded stories about him constantly. Medium and tutor Kim Moore-Cullen, whom Gordon had mentored, described his aura as otherworldly: "Just walking up to the college, if he was in the building, you could actually feel him, vibrating, in your head and in your body."
