FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

Spiritualism gave a voice not only to the dead, but to the marginalized. Its rejection of mainstream religion — and of death itself — drew radicals, intellectuals, and free-thinkers who championed causes ranging from abolition and prison reform to vegetarianism and children's rights.

The movement was especially tied to women's rights. At a time when women were forbidden from speaking in public, Lily Dale and other Spiritualist camps offered them a platform. Mediumship opened religious leadership roles to women for the first time in American history. Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for US president, campaigned as a Spiritualist medium in 1872. Suffragette Susan B. Anthony spoke regularly at Lily Dale and joined its annual Women's Suffrage Day parade every summer of the 1890s. Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger also spoke there.

Marion Skidmore, one of Lily Dale's founders, was herself a women's rights activist. The world's largest archive of Spiritualist books now lives in the library that bears her name — a collection that began with her own books.
