Mesmerism refers to the manipulation of an invisible life force, as theorized in the eighteenth century by the German physician Franz Mesmer. Several of Lily Dale’s founding members were already experimenting with mesmeric healings in 1844, four years before the emergence of Spiritualism. These practices later evolved into modern Spiritualist healing, in which healers describe themselves as conduits of energy who make a “great unseen healing force” available to others.

Since 1955, healing services have taken place free of charge at the Lily Dale Healing Temple. Dressed in white shirts and black pants, healers stand beside benches while visitors are brought forward one at a time. After a brief greeting, the person is asked to verbally accept the offer of healing.

The technique is similar to Reiki. Healers move their hands around the body—sometimes touching the skin, sometimes hovering just above it—working in silence against a background of soft music. When the treatment ends, they slowly wash and dry their hands before welcoming the next person. The sight of many healings occurring simultaneously creates an atmosphere that is almost hypnotic.
