FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

When I began this project, I knew almost nothing about Spiritualism. I couldn't understand how the people I met could seem perfectly sane while also claiming to speak with the dead. Curious, I started attending message services and sitting in on private readings.

I was surprised to learn that Spiritualists believe anyone can be a medium. Some are drawn in through childhood experiences or personal trauma; others come to it through study. Lynne Forget trained in her thirties. She describes the clairvoyant state as a kind of working altered state, entered through prayer. "Once I say my prayer," she says, "I trust that anything coming through my senses belongs to the person receiving the reading."

Several mediums told me that mediumship is really just a matter of taking your own imagination seriously. Dr. Neal Rzepkowski describes it as learning to trust the thoughts that enter your head — Spirit transmits information to the brain, he says, "like a download." Lily Dale's executive director Susan Glasier puts it simply: "We all have mediumship inside us." Her own turning point came while studying under medium Betty Schultz, who taught her never to question or interpret what comes in, however strange. Once, Susan saw a duck during a circle session and was too embarrassed to say so — until Betty pressed her. When she finally blurted it out, a fellow member immediately recognized it: she'd had a beloved pet duck as a child. Since then, Susan's rule is firm: "I do not doubt, no matter how silly it is. Don't interpret it — just give it."
