CELEBES CRESTED MACAQUE

Scientific name: Macaca Nigra

Range: Sulawesi, Indonesia

IUCN Red List Status: Critically Endangered

The species, known locally as “yaki” has been quietly dwindling away on Sulawesi where its remaining stronghold is the Tangkoko Nature Reserve at the Northern tip. A separate population was introduced 150 years ago to the small offshore island of Bacan, where - incongruously - its high numbers (some one hundred thousand) are straining natural resources.

Meanwhile, back on the main island, the macaques are losing to loggers and poachers (their meat is served as a delicacy at special occasions). They’re taken as pets, too, only to be kept on a chain because of their wild nature. Poaching and trapping is illegal; but infringers usually escape with just a fine, so there is little incentive to toe the line.

The yaki’s plight is however the focus of a global rescue effort. Partners include the Tasikoki Wildlife Rescue Center on North Sulawesi, which is rearing orphaned and rescued macaques for rerelease.

MACAQUE NÈGRE

Nom scientifique: Macaca Nigra
