"The nocturnal habit of these owls demands exceptional night vision; even though they primarily locate prey by sound, they rely on sharp eyesight to avoid trees and other obstacles as they pursue it. Their huge eyes (which each account for 3 percent of the owl’s total body weight) are specially adapted for this purpose—they are shaped like cylinders in order to maximize the surface area of the retina, which is packed with specialized photoreceptors that help these birds detect low-level light."
