(Version FR ci-dessous)

I want to share how this project came about. My neighbor had the most beautiful cherry blossom tree I had ever seen. It was taller than a man, with a thick trunk and dense branches heavy with cotton candy-like flowers every spring. I admired it every time I passed by. Then, one day, the tree disappeared. I hoped it had been sold, but no—when I peeked over the fence, I saw its trunk chopped clean. I learned that the tree had been removed because it was damaging the wall. I was shocked.

In this project, I recreate the tree using plastic, a ubiquitous man-made material (with part of it made from upcycled straws). This work is both my mourning and my tribute to that tree. Through this piece, I urge us to reconsider our selfish behaviors, or soon, artificial trees may be the only ones we have left to admire.

This project also includes photographs and a performance video. While the video “The Tree Spirit” tells the story of a tree fairy’s last dance, the photographs depict a character wandering through the woods, who happens upon a tree fairy. Just as

the boundary between dream and reality becomes blurred in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this could be a dream the character has in the forest, or perhaps it is the character actually witnessing the fairy’s dance. By creating layers of reality and

imagination once more, I wanted to break down that boundary and create a space that leaves a lingering impression on the audience.)
