Pteroglossus..."While their unique crown feathers, which look and feel like twisted plastic ribbon, inspired the common name of these aracaris, their Latin name actually references their highly specialized tongues. Pteroglossus translates to “feathered-tongue,” and like all other toucans, aracaris possess long pinnate tongues, an adaptation that increases the surface area of the tongue and gives these birds an extremely perceptive sense of taste, which allows them to easily identify if a fruit is edible and ripe."
