    VERSION FRANÇAISE PLUS BAS

Cassadaga takes its name from a Seneca word meaning "water beneath the rocks." Local maps show Indian burial mounds and possible ceremonial grounds along the upper lake, and lore ties Native ritual to the land. Many mediums and researchers believe water conducts psychic energy — a theory that may explain the wave of spiritual awakenings that swept Upstate New York in the mid-1800s. The region sits close to Lakes Erie and Ontario and Niagara Falls, and has produced a remarkable number of famous mediums. Writer Maurice Barbanell wondered whether the sheer force of Niagara's falling water carried some metaphysical charge. One strange footnote: the only time Niagara Falls ever stopped flowing was March 29, 1848 — just 48 hours before Spiritualism was born at the Fox Cottage, roughly 100 miles away.
