"Despite being one of the most common cage birds in the world, the Gouldian finch is threatened in the wild. Early conservation efforts sought to bolster the species by releasing captive birds, but these projects flopped—the captive birds just couldn’t survive outside of the aviary. Such stories emphasize the importance of preserving imperiled species in their natural habitats; if we allow them to disappear in the wild, we might never be able to bring them back."
