FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

In Zach (The Rider) #1, Dean West explores myth and ritual in the contemporary American West. Set in a Lienzo Charro arena, a space rooted in Mexican and Indigenous traditions, the photograph reimagines rodeo culture as a shared and layered history rather than a singular frontier story. The image captures a tense moment: a bull approaches while the rider stands still, the space between them charged with anticipation. West emphasizes this pause, highlighting themes of power, vulnerability, and tradition, while his precise, cinematic approach—careful composition, measured use of color, and expressive light—underscores the scene’s psychological depth.

The photograph asserts its authority through quiet restraint, neither romanticizing nor dismantling the West. It allows history, identity, and myth to remain unresolved, making the work a thoughtful reflection on American culture. Zach (The Rider) #1 is part of West’s ongoing American West project, a series of staged tableaux, landscapes, portraits, and films that examine rodeo culture, cowboy mythologies, and lived realities, presenting the West as a complex, evolving cultural landscape.

___
