Montcabirol, part of a 12th-century medieval settlement in the foothills of the Pyrenees, sits in the heart of Cathar country in southern France. In 2003, mediums Tom Morris and Kevin Lawrenson, along with their friend Charles Castle, bought the property and created a center for physical mediumship. After practicing privately for 30 years, Tom and Kevin publicly announced in 2008 that they had achieved full materialization, becoming known as The Yellow Cloud Circle of Eternal Illumination. Montcabirol drew Spiritualists and researchers from around the world, and in 2009 hosted what may have been the largest international gathering of physical mediums ever — six séance groups convening over four days.

Kevin first met Tom when he was 21, while Tom was working as an exotic dancer. Known as The Rhinestone Cowboy, Tom was one of London's first fully nude male strippers, famous for his fire-eating act. He retired after police raided a riverboat party on the Thames. A self-described "reluctant medium," Tom resisted his gifts until he began entering trance without warning.

Tom was adopted and later discovered his birth family was related to John Sloan — the Scottish medium who inspired Arthur Findlay's On the Edge of the Etheric (1932). Sloan died in 1951, the year Tom was born. Tom and Kevin believe Sloan's spirit serves as their gatekeeper, controlling which spirits may enter their séances.

Among their regular spirit visitors are Yellow Cloud, a Native American guide; Irene Simms, a circus performer who fell from a trapeze into a lion's cage; and Phil Starr, an English drag queen whose mission is to "tell the gays they all go to heaven." When Phil first appeared in a séance, Kevin screamed — and Phil shot back: "Oh, keep your hair on, darling!"

Over the years, visitors have reported extraordinary phenomena at Montcabirol — apports, direct voices, levitating tables, and full materializations. One sitter called it a "spiritual Coney Island." Medium Isabelle Duchene recalls a summer séance when Tom levitated to the ceiling as a thundercloud formed directly above the house, sending hail crashing onto the roof.
