After discovering mediums' cabinets in historical séance photographs, I became fascinated and wanted to see one in person. The first I encountered had belonged to Gordon Higginson, the respected former principal of Arthur Findlay College, who kept the tradition of the public ectoplasmic séance alive long after it had fallen out of fashion.

In 1974, Psychic News documented a séance using this cabinet, complete with infrared photographs. An entranced Gordon told the crowd: "Death was only a move from one scene to another." He then delivered 90 minutes of uninterrupted mediumship — clairvoyant messages, flowing ectoplasm, and the full materialization of a 24-year-old woman named Gill, who had died in an Austrian avalanche. Gill appeared to greet her mother, who was present, and who confirmed her daughter's identity.
