"Owls are eerily silent in flight, because unlike other birds, their wing feathers have a velvety upper surface and are tipped with comblike serrations that reduce the amount of turbulence (and therefore noise) generated as air passes over the wing. Research has shown that these adaptations actually provide a double benefit for these nocturnal predators, making them stealthier while also preventing their wing strokes from drowning out the faint sounds they use to locate prey."
