Elsewhere they are extreme altitudinal migrants: during the summer months, they inhabit alpine environments of more than 14,000 feet (4,300 m), digging through the tundra with their heavy-set bill for roots, tubers, and insect larvae, then during winter, when heavy snowfall at the upper elevations prevents the birds from finding food there, they retreat to lower elevations.
