"The female superb fruit dove barely resembles this extravagant male; instead of his magenta crown, yellow cheeks, orange neck, white throat, and black breast-band, she sports simple green upperparts and a sickly gray breast. This dramatic difference is known as sexual dimorphism and it is quite common among species that don’t require the female to impress her mate; it allows the females to retain cryptic colors that help them avoid predators, even as their own sexual preferences drive the males to become increasingly ornate."
