West’s surreal, atmospheric and cinematic photographs perfectly capture moments suspended in time. The characters within these domestic and natural landscapes however, tell a larger story: one that inhabits our own perceptions of time, place and identity.
An otherworldly and compelling scene, La Piscina l, focuses on two young men who encounter a lone wolf while going for a midnight swim. There’s a feeling of youthful freedom in the air and the humidity of a warm summer's night creating a misty full moon. Playfully entwining our own desires for summer, adventure and even the American dream; the encounter with a lone wolf amplifies West’s surreal and cinematic approach to storytelling. The cerulean blue, mid-century pool lights up the scene with a mesmeric twilight coolness. Subtropical foliage provides a sense of geography and although the scene is incredibly transient, there’s movement in the trees above.
