Signaling the beginning of a potential new series, West debuts the first picture from American West continuing his exploration with the cowboy motif. The desert bathed in the warm hues and iridescent pink from the sunset sky, is more reminiscent of 19th century landscape painting rather than a modern photograph- a common description used upon seeing West’s cinematic imagery.

The lone cowboy, silhouetted against the warm sky nearing its last light, makes a solitary phone call. Who he calls, we do not know. The old gas station and desert plant life allude to a time now past. Cowboys have long been a part of the history and culture of San Bernardino County in California. The region has a rich history tied to the Old West and ranching. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, cattle ranching was a significant industry in Southern California, especially in San Bernardino County. It naturally brought cowboys into the area, who were essential for handling cattle and managing ranch operations.

Démarrant ainsi une nouvelle série potentielle, Dean West nous propose une oeuvre inspirée de l’Ouest Américain à travers un motif qui lui est cher: le cowboy solitaire. Le désert baigné dans les tonalités chaudes et irridescentes du crépuscule, évoque les compositions picturales du 19ème siècle plutôt qu’une photographie contemporaine.
