COMMON HIPPOPOTAMUS

Scientific name: Hippopotamus amphibius

Range: Sub-Saharan Africa

IUCN Red List Status: Vulnerable

Hippos are hunted for bushmeat, particularly in countries where finding proteins is a struggle for communities. A 2003 survey in the Democratic Republic of Congo estimated hippo numbers had fallen by 95 percent during eight years of civil war. It is not just meat, either; in the wake of the 1989 ban on trading elephant ivory poachers have switched their attention to to the hippo’s magnificent canines, such that, today, African elephants outnumber hippos roughly four to one. Eradicating the ivory trade will be a tough challenge. Hippo teeth are still being smuggled out of several African countries (among them Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Mozambique), mostly to Hong Kong, where ivory is carved into trinkets. The skin, too, is sought for leatherwork.

Currently, the hippo is listed on CITES Appendix II, restricting international trade; but until the law is enforced on the ground, hippo fortunes will continue to founder.

HIPPOPOTAME

Nom scientifique: Hippopotamus amphibius
