FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

Atchoum (French for “achoo”) is no ordinary Persian—he’s an internet sensation born in 2014 in Quebec, Canada. Gifted to a veterinarian and later the clinic groomer, he developed hypertrichosis, a rare condition causing excessive hair growth. His human companion embraces his wild, “mad scientist” look while managing his famously unruly coat. Though uncommon in cats, hypertrichosis leads to constant hair growth and thickened claws; in Atchoum’s case, his claws once curved into his paw pads, requiring declawing to prevent discomfort.

His fame reflects the internet’s enduring obsession with cats—so widespread that even Sir Tim Berners-Lee once noted “kittens” as one of the web’s unexpected main uses. From Grumpy Cat to Nala Cat and Lil Bub, feline influencers dominate social media, with cats even being among the first objects a supercomputer learned to recognize in online video data. Their expressive faces, unpredictable behavior, and mix of dignity and absurdity have cemented cats as icons of meme culture, endlessly fueling viral content across the internet.
