FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

We are particularly sensitive to features associated with “cute” faces, such as large eyes and a high proportion of eye-to-face ratio. These so-called supernormal stimuli strongly influence human perception and can even help explain our widespread fascination with cute cat content. In this sense, the rounded face and soft expression of the Scottish Fold appear especially appealing to us because they align with these innate, species-specific preferences.

The Scottish Fold originated in 1961 when a farm cat in Scotland named Susie was discovered with unusually folded ears. While the breed became popular for its distinctive appearance and gentle temperament, the mutation responsible affects cartilage and bone development throughout the body. This can lead to serious health issues, including arthritis and skeletal deformities, which is why several feline organizations do not recognise the breed and breeding is restricted in some countries. In response, breeders are increasingly promoting healthier approaches, including the recognition of the Scottish Straight, with the aim of preserving the breed’s affectionate character while phasing out the harmful mutation.
