On a Saturday afternoon in 1992, while chatting with a woman he had just met in a pub, construction worker Chris Howarth watched the room fill with swirling mist. A staircase appeared, and the woman's deceased son walked down it and said: "Tell my mum to stop crying!" When the fog cleared, Chris heard a voice repeating in his head: "Harrogate Spiritualist Church." He put down his pint and left to find it. His life as a Spiritualist medium had begun.

At Harrogate Spiritualist Church, Chris met visiting medium Sandy Sinclair, whose description of her séance room fascinated him. She became his mentor. In 1994, he joined Robin Foy's Noah's Ark Society — an English group formed to save physical mediumship from extinction — and soon began demonstrating as a physical medium himself.
