FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS
I first encountered Sylvia Howarth through an email she sent after finding my website. She introduced herself with photos of her in trance—screen grabs from self-documentation videos capturing moments when the media glitched and she appeared mid-metamorphosis. In these images, her body seemed torn open and transformed. We began experimenting together, and her visuals inspired our first works, as I tried to echo the mask-like forms in her images. Since then, I’ve photographed Sylvia in various experimental séance settings and have been struck by both her inventive home constructions and her constant creative output, from trance work to objects, clothing, sculptures, and drawings inspired by the spirit world.

In this experiment, medium Sylvia Howarth merges gaming technology with mediumship, using a Microsoft Xbox Kinect motion sensor. Sitting in a cabinet, she has the sensor track her body, then invites a present spirit to move it independently — without attaching to her own motion. Here, she asks a spirit to shake hands with Donna Sinclair Hogan.
