Provenance

FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

Spiritualism seeks to unite religion and science. As the National Spiritualist Association of Churches states, communication with the dead is "a fact, scientifically proven by the phenomena of Spiritualism." Spiritualist art-making reflects this dual purpose — created as both art and evidence of life after death.

This image is an enlargement of one of my photographs, used in an experiment by Lily Dale historian Ron Nagy. In 2003, an iridologist named Anna Marie Warringer noticed remarkable detail in the eyes of the precipitated paintings on display. Ron invited her to assess the irises of Mrs. A. B. Caldwell — a member of one of Lily Dale's founding families — using an enlarged print of a Bangs sisters' painting. Anna Marie drew her medical diagnosis directly onto the image. Ron then researched Mrs. Caldwell's actual health history and compared it to the iridology findings. The results were published in his book Precipitated Spirit Paintings (2006). Anna Marie's diagram now hangs in Lily Dale Museum.
