FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

A séance trumpet is a cone, usually made of aluminum or cardboard, that is used with the intention to amplify any sounds made by spirits. The shape is inspired by the megaphone or, some say, the early hearing aids known as “ear trumpets.” Spiritualists believe that spirits can use ectoplasm to make a voice box inside the small end of the conical device, projecting the bodiless spirit voice out of its other end. These trumpets, hand painted by medium Sylvia Howarth, show some of the most popular celebrity spirits in contemporary Spiritualism. They include Michael Jackson, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, Louis Armstrong, Quentin Crisp, and Freddie Mercury.

These figures are often favored within Spiritualist practice because they are widely recognizable and carry strong, distinct identities that can be easily imagined or “received” during séances. Many are associated with powerful voices—literal or symbolic—which aligns with the trumpet’s role as a speaking device. Others are seen as charismatic cultural icons whose creativity, individuality, or historical importance suggests a continued presence beyond death. Their familiarity also helps participants feel a sense of connection and validation, making spirit communication seem more immediate, personal, and believable.
