FRANÇAIS CI-DESSOUS

When I showed Gordon the trance photographs, he paused on one image I had almost deleted — a shot where his ectoplasmic mask gave him what struck me as an oddly Hitler-esque mustache. I'd found it too eerie to share, but Gordon simply said, "Wow. I love this." He didn't explain why, and I didn't ask.

Six months later, visiting Gordon and his wife Gaynor at their home in northern England, we looked through the photographs together. Midway through, Gordon remembered something he wanted to show me. He left the room and returned with a photo of his great-grandfather — a carte de visite, shown here in the final image of the series. We held it beside the laptop screen and compared the faces. The resemblance was uncanny. It was the strongest photographic synchronicity I had encountered in all my years photographing Spiritualism.

When I later asked Gordon whether his great-grandfather's spirit had been present when I made the photograph, he replied: "I am certain that he was there."
