FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

After discovering Zuu on social media, a single call to his owner in Japan quickly set everything in motion. Just one month later, we were in Kobe photographing this distinctive Exotic Shorthair at a cozy, character-filled cat café filled with whimsical artwork. During the shoot, we were also surprised to encounter a Cornish Rex—unexpectedly far from Cornwall, England, where the breed originates and where I spent my childhood.

The idea of “kawaii” in Japan, now synonymous with maximal cuteness, only emerged in the early 1970s, though earlier writing such as Sei Shōnagon’s The Pillow Book already contained descriptions of similar aesthetic sensibilities. Today, kawaii has become a dominant cultural force in fashion and pop culture, and cats like Zuu perfectly embody it with their enduring, effortless cuteness.
