ENGLISH

Convergence by Astrid Verhoef was created during her travels through Spain, where the intensity of the sunlit landscapes became both inspiration and catalyst. In these vast and desolate environments, Verhoef experienced nature not as a passive backdrop, but as a force capable of shaping human emotion and perception. The work reflects an awareness of the fragile yet inseparable relationship between ourselves and the world around us — how small we are in the presence of nature, yet how deeply connected we remain to it. At the heart of Convergence lies the idea of interconnectedness, where apparent opposites such as human and natural, artificial and organic, no longer exist in isolation but continuously influence and transform one another.

Through self-portraiture, lens-based imagery, and collage techniques, Verhoef constructs a layered composition in which multiple realities merge into a single visual language. Artificial forms appear within untouched landscapes, at times disruptive and at others unexpectedly harmonious, revealing both humanity’s impact on nature and its desire to coexist with it. A subtle surrealism runs throughout the work, while light plays a central role — not only as a visual element, but also as a metaphor for connection itself. Whether visible or unseen, Verhoef suggests that we are all shaped by the same forces: landscape, memory, time, and one another.
