FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

In Domestic Study # 1, West extends the cinematic language that has long shaped his photographic practice, constructing an image that feels less like a captured moment than a suspended scene from an unresolved film. Two figures occupy the ordered geometry of a mid-century modern residence, their physical separation and restrained gestures creating a psychological tension that resists narrative closure. The architecture, swimming pool, sculpture and tropical landscape evoke the visual vocabulary of postwar American prosperity, yet West treats these elements not simply as décor but as carriers of social and historical meaning. The apparent perfection of the setting is unsettled by the ambiguity of the figures within it, allowing questions of race, class, aspiration and belonging to enter a visual history from which they have often been absent. Characteristic of West’s cinematic tableaux, the photograph collapses past and present, documentation and invention. Rather than reconstructing history, it proposes an alternative space within it—one in which memory remains unstable, and the act of looking becomes an act of interpretation.
