FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

In Domestic Study #3 I & II, West presents two moments within an identical mid-century interior, separated by an indeterminate passage of time. In the first, a man stands beside a window, seemingly absorbed in thought. In the second, a woman sits alone, her gaze lowered. The architecture, furnishings, and light remain unchanged, yet the room's emotional register has shifted. The photographs explore the relationship between presence and absence, suggesting that time might be understood not simply through what changes, but through what remains. The carefully ordered interior becomes a silent witness to its occupants, while the empty space between them acquires a psychological weight. Whether these figures share a history, inhabit the same moment, or exist years apart remains unresolved. Viewed individually, each photograph presents a self-contained moment of introspection. As a diptych, however, the images introduce an imagined interval—a space in which memory, separation, and the possibility of an unseen narrative emerge. Their stillness recalls photography's peculiar relationship with time: its ability to preserve an instant while simultaneously making us conscious of everything that lies beyond it. Within West's broader Domestic Study project, the home becomes both a physical environment and a repository of imagined histories. Here, the absence of action is the subject itself. The distance between the two figures is measured not in space, but in time, and in all that remains unspoken.
