"Nale is the daughter of one of the elders of the Suri tribe of Ethiopia, very close to the border with Sudan.
I took this picture a few years ago during my first trip to the west
side of the Omo river. I was fascinated by her beauty and attitude
towards us. She was watching us all day making sure we were ok and you
could see that she was hoping I would take a picture of her as
well. And yes I did and it became one ofy iconic pictures.
The size of the earring is relative to the dowry. The larger the plate in her ear, the higher the bride price."J. C. Schlegel
__"Nale est la fille de l'un des anciens de la tribu Suri, implantée en Éthiopie, proche de la frontière avec le Soudan. J'ai pris cette photo lors de mon premier voyage sur la rive ouest de la rivière Omo. Je fus fasciné par sa beauté ainsi que par son attitude vis-à-vis de nous. Elle s'occupa de nous avec attention toute la journée pour s'assurer que nous allions bien, et je devinais qu'elle aurait bien aimé être prise en photo. C'est ce que je fis et ce cliché constitue aujourd'hui l'une des mes photos les plus connues. La taille des boucles d'oreilles est relative à sa dot. Le plus large est le plateau, le plus élevé sera le prix.."J. C. Schlegel
