In Domestic Study #3 I & II, West presents two moments within an identical mid-century interior, separated by an indeterminate passage of time. In the first, a man stands beside a window, seemingly absorbed in thought. In the second, a woman sits alone, her gaze lowered. The architecture, furnishings, and light remain unchanged, yet the room's emotional register has shifted. The photographs explore the relationship between presence and absence, suggesting that time might be understood not simply through what changes, but through what remains. The carefully ordered interior becomes a silent witness to its occupants, while the empty space between them acquires a psychological weight. Whether these figures share a history, inhabit the same moment, or exist years apart remains unresolved. Viewed individually, each photograph presents a self-contained moment of introspection. As a diptych, however, the images introduce an imagined interval—a space in which memory, separation, and the possibility of an unseen narrative emerge. Their stillness recalls photography's peculiar relationship with time: its ability to preserve an instant while simultaneously making us conscious of everything that lies beyond it. Within West's broader Domestic Study project, the home becomes both a physical environment and a repository of imagined histories. Here, the absence of action is the subject itself. The distance between the two figures is measured not in space, but in time, and in all that remains unspoken.

Dans Domestic Study #3 I & II, West présente deux instants au sein d’un même intérieur du milieu du XXe siècle, séparés par un laps de temps indéterminé. Dans la première photographie, un homme se tient près d’une fenêtre, apparemment absorbé dans ses pensées. Dans la seconde, une femme est assise seule, le regard baissé. L’architecture, le mobilier et la lumière demeurent inchangés, tandis que la tonalité émotionnelle de la pièce s’est transformée.

Ces photographies explorent la relation entre présence et absence, suggérant que le temps pourrait se comprendre non seulement à travers ce qui change, mais aussi à travers ce qui demeure. L’intérieur soigneusement ordonné devient un témoin silencieux de ses occupants, tandis que l’espace vide qui les sépare acquiert une dimension psychologique. On ignore si ces personnages partagent une histoire, habitent le même instant ou vivent à plusieurs années d’intervalle.

Considérée isolément, chaque photographie présente un instant d’introspection qui se suffit à lui-même. Réunies en diptyque, cependant, les images introduisent un intervalle imaginaire — un espace où émergent la mémoire, la séparation et la possibilité d’un récit invisible. Leur immobilité évoque le rapport singulier de la photographie au temps : sa capacité à préserver un instant tout en nous faisant prendre conscience de tout ce qui lui échappe.

Dans le cadre plus large du projet Domestic Study de West, la maison devient à la fois un environnement physique et un réceptacle d’histoires imaginées. Ici, l’absence d’action constitue le sujet même de l’œuvre. La distance entre les deux personnages ne se mesure pas en espace, mais en temps et dans tout ce qui demeure inexprimé.
