Essence is a powerful and evocative series by Jan C. Schlegel, created with the intention of conveying the beauty, dignity, pride, and hope of people who live in harmony with, and deeply cherish, their native traditions and cultures. The series features a selection portraits of tribal communities from across Africa and Asia, including the Turkana, Rendille, Pokot, and Maasai of Kenya; the Mursi, Suri, Ebore, Hamar, and Kara of Ethiopia; the Himba of Namibia; the Bedouin of Egypt and Libya; the Tuareg of Algeria; and the Hazara, Nuristani, Kalash, and Pashtun of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Using a handmade wooden camera and meticulous hand-toning techniques, Schlegel captures every detail — textures, scars, adornments, and imperfections — with remarkable clarity and sensitivity. His portraits are marked by an abiding intimacy and intensity that reveal the intrinsic humanity of his subjects. One such image, Hembinda, Himba Tribe, Namibia, 2010, is a compelling example — a portrait of striking stillness and strength that reflects the quiet resilience and cultural richness of the Himba people.

Through Essence, Schlegel offers a timeless homage to cultures often overlooked, inviting viewers to witness not only their external beauty, but also their enduring spirit and resilience.
