FRANÇAIS CI-APRÈS

Breed standards are ultimately open to interpretation: how large is “large,” for example? Some European breeders of Oriental Shorthairs actively select for cats with extremely large, horizontally placed ears. The result can be striking—comical or even unsettling depending on one’s perspective—but these exaggerated features do not appear to negatively affect the cats themselves. Still, it raises an interesting question about how far such aesthetic trends can, or should, be taken.

Nothing may seem cuter than a big-eared young cat, but the impression can quickly change once they open their mouths. Cats of the Siamese lineage are famously vocal: described by some as “constant nonstop talkers,” with a reputation for relentless chatter that is well documented among enthusiasts. To experience it firsthand, one only needs to visit a cat show and linger near Siamese, Oriental Shorthairs, or Colorpoint Shorthairs, where a chorus of “mi-Ahhh, mi-Ahhh” can often be heard as the cats vocalise continuously.
